Primate’s address to support CFFA

Dear faithful,
The Children’s Fund for Armenia (CFFA) was established in 1990 under the auspices of the Holy Armenian Apostolic Church Diocese of Canada. Its main mission has been to help those children who became orphans because of the 1988 Earthquake and, subsequently because of the Artsakh war.
Since its inception and thanks to the donations and sponsorship of our Canadian-Armenian faithful, the program has provided ongoing help to approximately 2000 orphans and needy children.
It has become obvious that the mission of CFFA will require some changes. The CFFA committee has decided to continue the program with future changes that will take effect in 2015.
The intention of CFFA is to focus its activities in order to aid the orphans and children of poor and needy families living at the border villages of Armenia. Simultaneous with providing aid comes the possibility of improving the life of the villagers by creating jobs.
Dear Faithful,
Let us praise and pray for the Glorification of our Lord; being the Lord’s creatures, may we promote happiness and be witness to a joyous and beautiful world.
We appeal to you, on behalf of CFFA, to continue the honest Christian tradition of Charity by donating to its mission, thus contributing to a positive change in the life of those in need.
With love and prayers,
Bishop Abgar Hovakimian
Primate of the Armenian Apostolic Church Canadian Diocese

SILENT AUCTION for the benefit of CFFA

Silent/Open Auction held on Saturday, November 27, 2010 was very successful auction of Jewellery and fine accessories, and all for the benefit of children at Our Lady of Armenia orphanage in Gyumri, and Children’s Fund for Armenia. We made enough money with financial donations and items sold to also give 20% to Mher Avanesyan, the paralympic athlete who is establishing himself as a sheep farmer in the homeland. This event would not have been possible without the dedication and tireless efforts of a committee of seven. They were as follows, Astra Yaghdjian, Arax Amirians, Brigitte Karakas, Hasmig Isbeceryan, Nania Tchakedjian Bache, Sirarpy Arslanian and Taline Giragosian.
The local community, parishioners of our Church and people from far away places such as Eastern Canada and the U.S.A. contributed to this charity event. People started arriving at Setrak Kalpakian Hall after 7:00p.m. and the Hall and items were very well decorated and artistically arranged. They started to bid taking great interest in the items, and all ages of people were present. Others proceeded to make financial donations. After putting in their bids, they’d relax and munch on all the goodies prepared and donated by our community members, and sipping at a beverage of their choice. It was a happy and emotional event filled with a sense of giving for the underprivileged children of Armenia. We hope to make this a yearly event. Thank you to all!

The Heart Reaches Out

cffa_imageFew opportunities in life are as direct, simple and rewarding at those offered to contributors to the Children’s Fund for Armenia (CFFA). Created in the aftermath of a natural disaster, one can make an enormous difference to the life of a child with a contribution of less than one dollar a day. This charitable Fund expresses the sense of community, the generosity and humanity of Armenians everywhere. Each One Reaches One: CFFA has sponsored more than 1500 children left orphaned by the earthquake that devastated Armenia on 7 December 1988. Through sponsorship, financial assistance is provided to the families and guardians caring for them. Now, 13 years later, our goal is to expand CFFA’s charter to include children who are living in poverty as a result of the country’s deteriorating economy, and children who have lost a parent through illness of the Karabagh conflict.
Spiritual and financial support are need to continue this humanitarian partnership between our Canadian Diocese and Armenia’s future generation.

How The Fund Began

Madeline Dovletian wanted to sponsor an orphaned Armenian child. Clergy and Armenian organizations around the world were concentrating their efforts on the national scale relief. Through perseverance and the efforts of an aunt in Yerevan, she became the sponsor of 10 year old Edgar Haroutiounian. He was the first Canadian-sponsored child eventually there would be 1500. The needs of these orphaned children galvanized concerned Canadian-Armenians. Under the auspices of the Primate of the Canadian Diocese His Eminence Bishop Hovnan Derderian, a committee was formed to initiate a sponsorship program.
A liaison committee was created in Yerevan with the approval of the late Catholicos of All Armenians, His Holiness Vazgen I. In July 1991, Ms. Dovletian and Ms. Diana Bogosyan traveled to Armenia and undertook a massive effort to document the first 160orphaned children.
The dossier with photos, personal data, family background and a short history of each child formed the template for information that is provided to each sponsor. The CFFA expanded. Executive Committees were organized in Montreal and Vancouver. Today, there are CFFA Committees in almost every parish within the Canadian Diocese including generous sponsors from Europe and the USA.
